My time as a freelancer

Following the recession, which hit the UAE in early 2009, my employer, IIR Middle East, laid off over half of its production team. I was included in the final round of layoffs. Nonetheless, I had already started freelancing for the leading English-language newspaper in Abu Dhabi: The National Newspaper.

During the few months it took me to land another job, I continued this freelance work. Once I had new full-time employment, I ended this freelance work for the most part. I did write another freelance article or two during that time, but most of my editorial work from then on was directly for clients as part of my full-time employment roles.
